SIGNIFICANCEOn our part the sacrament calls for contrition and exchanges of the heart, consequently leading to a separation from sin and a turning towards God. Those who approach the sacrament of reconciliation are given pardon from God’s mercy for the sin committed against him. At the same time, the person is also reconciled with the Church. The Church celebrates this as the forgiving presence of God, ritualising through word, gesture and symbols the restoration of relationship with God and others. In the sacrament, Jesus, through the Church, in the words and actions of the priest brings forward God’s love and forgiveness. |
