GLOSSARY
RECONCILIATION: A sacrament in which a person is forgiven by Christ from their sins after baptism. CONFESSION: A statement by a person in which they express something that may have been hidden or kept to themselves. ABSOLUTION: The act of a priest during the forgiveness of the sins of the penitent. RITE OF RECONCILIATION: One of the three rituals for celebrating the Sacrament of Penance. SIN: A deliberate thought, word or deed against the word of God. PENANCE: The name given to the sacrament of 'forgiveness' through which Jesus and the Holy Spirit restore the human relationship with God after sin. PARABLE: A parable is a story used to illustrate a moral or spiritual lesson, as told my Jesus in the Gospels. COMMANDMENT: In the Old Testament, a 'Word' a rhythmic phrase given by God to help people recall God's laws. There were 'Ten Words' or laws, which we have come to call the Ten Commandments. In the New Testament, Jesus gave two Commandments - to love God and to love your neighbour, as you love yourself. The Commandments of the Old Test can only be fully understood in the light of the Commandments of Jesus. |
